This braaibroodjie recipe is the perfect braai companion. These braaibroodjie will accopany any braai dish, from this traditional snoek braai, to any local braai. This of a braaibroodjie as toasted cheese, onion, and tomato sandwich, prepared over open coals.  As easy as that.

A braai is not the same thing without a braai broodjie and homemade braaibroodjies are the best. braaibroodjies are also commercially available, but believe me, when I say, it is not the same thing. I am also happy to share one of the secret ingredients in my braaibroodjies with you. It is apricot jam, and I spread it on the inside slices of the braaibroodjies and it really enhances the flavour and adds traditional braaibroodjie flavour. Some people do chutney, and mayonnaise, but together with the tomatoes, make the bread soggy and it becomes difficult to handle over the open coals.

  1. Lay 4 slices of bread side-to-side on a work surface
  2. Spread margarine on the outside and apricot jam on the inside of the slices
  3. Sprinkle generos amounts of cheddar cheese evenly over the apricot sides of the slices. Add a few slices of tomato on top of each layer of cheese. Season with salt and grind a little black pepper over the tomato slices
  4. sprinkle a little cheese over the tomato again. This prevents the braaibroodjies from becoming soggy when handled
  5. Cover the final layer of cheese evenly with onion rings
  6. Spread margarine and apricot jam over the remaining bread slices in the same order, margarine on the outside and apricot jam on the inside. Place the slices, apricot side down, on top of the final layer of onion rings. Your braaibroodjies are now ready for the braai. Enjoy!
