Oxtail stew is a beef stew with a twist, using the tail of the ox, as the meat. There is something very interesting about this oxtail stew recipe. When I close my eyes and think about this oxtail soup, I can actually smell it cooking in my Ouma's (grandma's) kitchen. This recipe is imprinted in my memory like math tables are imprinted in a child's memory.
This oxtail stew recipe has been passed onto me from my mother's side. It is a traditional recipe that was passed onto my mother by her mother. I am sure the tradition will continue for many more generations.
Some people refer to oxtail stew as oxtail soup, but there is a big difference. The ingredients are different and oxtail soup is prepared in a pressure cooker. Oxtail soup is also not served with starches like rice, whereas oxtail stew is.
This oxtail stew recipe can be enjoyed by the whole family. Kids generally love it for some reason, most likely because they can eat the meat off the bones using their hands. Yes, it is messy, but makes for a good laugh and what is better than seeing your kids enjoying their food?
We hope you will enjoy this oxtail soup recipe as much as our family does. If you do, please share it with your friends and family or leave a comment to let us know what you think.
Thanks and enjoy!
Eds Note: This is a basic oxtail stew recipe. The same ingredients can be used in a beef stew recipe. If you prefer, you can also add potatoes. The potatoes will absorb the gravy sauce and add rich flavour to this oxtail soup recipe
